Colossal Concrete

POLES & MASTS

Colossal concrete poles and masts are manufactured in our ISO 9001 accredited factory in Gauteng. They are available in a wide range of strengths and sizes designed to comply with most MV and LV line requirements, and comply with Eskom DTC 0106 and various SABS and Transnet specifications. Our poles and masts are based on a unique design pioneered by Firth Stresscrete in New Zealand, a recognised authority on electricity reticulation poles. The units are ideally suited to applications such as power transmission, distribution, telecommunications and overhead electrical equipment (OHTE) for railways.

Our design is based on the optimal reinforcement of concrete, resulting in lightweight concrete poles and masts with considerable transport and handling advantages.

Our poles and masts have been tried and tested in the market for over 20 years.

Our poles are used extensively by our customers and the end users in the following industries :

ELECTRIFICATION

  • Eskom

  • Transnet

  • Prasa

  • Various Municipalities

  • Various Government Housing Projects

  • Various Private industrial, Residential and Commercial Developments

TELECOMS

  • Vodacom

ABOUT OUR
CONCRETE POLES

The high strength-to-weight ratio of prestressed-concrete electrification poles and masts places them in a class of their own. Prestressed concrete poles and masts are functional yet relatively light, making them convenient for contractors to handle.

Appearance

  • Cast with tapered I-Section designs in aesthetically-pleasing light-grey concrete

  • High-strength, high-density concrete has a smooth finish which is resistant to the elements.

Durability

  • Experience worldwide demonstrates that during their lifetime, prestressed concrete poles are maintenance-free

  • Concrete, unlike other materials, suffers no loss of strength over the years, being resistant to insects, fire, rot and corrosion

  • Concrete poles and masts require no chemical treatment thus avoiding the risk of soil contamination

  • Unlikely target of vandalism or theft as concrete poles have no resale or scrap value, nor can they be used to make fires or as building material.

Strength and availability

  • Prestressed concrete poles and masts are resilient and will recover from the effects of a greater degree of overload than any other type of structural material.

  • The poles and masts have a crushing strength of 60 MPa and after 28 days they are fully prestressed.

  • They are manufactured in a wide range of strengths and sizes to fill most requirements in MV and LV lines.

  • By choosing the appropriate pole or mast and foundation design, end-poles can be planted without stays, thereby saving space and eliminating clutter.

  • Prestressed concrete poles and masts are manufactured to guarantee maximum strength, which takes the guesswork out of line design.

Added Features

  • Can be cast with internal conduits for use in applications such as street lighting, security cameras etc.

  • Supplied with standard holes.

  • All poles and masts come with options for earthing wires.

  • Earthing bars with 12mm sockets at standard points can be cast into the poles on request

  • Poles and masts can be stockpiled indefinitely in remote places without concern for theft, rot or corrosion.

Product Accessories

  • Product Accessories

  • We have developed a number of accessory products to improve convenience, speed and cost savings for product installation contractors.

These include :

  1. Stay poles

  2. Various Ballasts

  3. Foundation Lintels

CONCRETE
POLES

COLOSSAL CONCRETE PRODUCTS has introduced a new type of streetlight pole to help authorities eliminate cable theft and the concomitant disruption to streetlighting. Fully compliant with SABS 470 codes, the pole is available from 7-13m lengths.

The new pole offers the advantage of being cast with internal conduits, thereby enabling electric cabling to be drawn through the middle of the pole rather than being clamped externally. This means that the cabling is not only supported by the poles but protected as well.

The introduction of these poles is a huge deterrent to cable theft.
Furthermore, concrete poles have no resale or scrap value; nor can they be used as firewood or building material.

The high strength-to-weight ratio of prestressed concrete poles differentiates them from poles made from other materials. Moreover, the properties of prestressed concrete ensure that poles are thin and functional yet light enough for contractors to handle with ease.

They are also maintenance-free and, unlike other materials, suffer no loss of strength over the years, being resistant to insects, fire, decay and corrosion.

Applications

  1. Prestressed concrete poles are widely used for streetlighting

  2. Areas with aggressive environments are especially suited to prestressed concrete poles

  3. They are ideal in applications where maintenance-free, high-quality solutions are required.

ELECTRIFICATION

POLES

Our range of precast concrete poles for electrification projects are available from 7-13m lengths. All electrification poles have an earth wire and are fully compliant with SABS 470 codes. We have also introduced a range of “hollow” poles which are cast with internal conduits, thereby enabling electric cabling to be drawn through the middle of the pole rather than being clamped externally. This means that the cabling is not only supported by the poles but protected as well.

Advantages of concrete electrification poles

  • Durable 60MPa low permeability concrete

  • Fully prestressed

  • Weight-saving, I-section design

  • Maintenance-free

  • Aesthetically pleasing

  • Free-standing masts to specifications

  • Less Prone to theft than steel or wooden poles

Added features

  • Can be cast with varying sizes of conduits for use in applications such as street lighting, solar panels, security cameras etc.

We have developed a number of accessory products which help to create efficiencies and achieve cost savings for contractors conducting electrification works.

RAIL ELECTRIFICATION &
SURVEILANCE MASTS

The high-strength-to-weight ratio of prestressed concrete electrification masts sets them apart from poles made of other materials. Fully prestressed masts are produced using 60MPa concrete. The rectangular taper of Colossal's concrete masts and an I-Section design results in an aesthetically pleasing light-grey pole. Concrete masts are corrosion resistant and enjoy an internationally proven reputation for maintenance-free performance.

Advantages of electrification masts

•    Durable 60MPa low permeability concrete
•    Fully prestressed
•    Weight-saving, I-section design
•    Maintenance-free
•    Aesthetically pleasing
•    Free-standing masts to specifications
•    Cast-in earthing bar with 12mm sockets (optional)

Our range of precast concrete poles for overhead fibre optic cable lines which are available from 7-13m lengths. We have also introduced a range of “hollow” poles which are cast with internal conduits, thereby enabling fibre optic cables to be drawn through the middle of the pole rather than being clamped externally. This allows underground fibre optic cable lines to seamlessly integrate and flow into overhead lines without the cables being exposed on ground surface level.

Advantages of concrete telecommunication poles

  • Durable 60MPa low permeability concrete

  • Fully prestressed

  • Weight-saving, I-section design

  • Maintenance-free

  • Aesthetically pleasing

  • Free-standing masts to specifications

  • Less Prone to theft than steel or wooden poles

  • Long lifespan without the maintenance burden associated with other products

Added features

  • Can be cast with varying sizes of conduits.

  • Supplied with standard holes.

  • All poles and masts come with options for earthing wires.

  • Poles and masts can be stockpiled indefinitely in remote places without concern for theft, rot or corrosion.
